“I can’t smell anything,” complained Grainpaw. “The scent disappears from these stones too quickly.”
“That’s because the stones heat up faster than earth,” Rainfall told him. “You should seek the trail where it’s wet and cool, and that means under the stones, not on them. Try once more.”

Rainfall was awakened by a rough cough. The grey tom attempted to cover his muzzle with his paws, but couldn’t muffle the dry rasping sound. Opening his eyes, he saw Blackwhisker crouched in his own nest, his body shaking in a fit of cough. Hazelbush bent over him, rubbing some kind of medicine ointment in his chest as he muttered something into his whiskers. Finally, the deputy stopped coughing, but Rainfall could hear his heavy wheezing breath from the other side of the den.
